Apparently it is a Mangosteen!
Quite a rare tropical fruit that is not seen around often. When 1 was brought to the library the other day for identification many of us drew a blank. We were not even sure if it was real as it had the distinct look of a plastic ornament and there was no smell!
Anyway while at the market today we spotted some and decided to try. I had it on good advice that this fruit is the most exquisite eating.
The taste is a sweet fruit burst like no other. It is a taste sensation. Very delicious.
After breaking open the outer shell that is like a passionfruit, firm on the outside but softish flesh a deep redish purple colour that stains like beetroot, you find a white flesh which is the part you eat. The flesh comes away from the shell very easily and has the texture of a lychee, a bit squishy and slippery, but is also similar to a mandarin with segmented parts. Some of the segments contain flat slimy stones.
What a wonderful experience.
